Making Sense of Social Complexity through Strange Attractors

Strange attractors – emerging out of the chaotic dynamics of the thoughts and feelings constantly swarming in the mental space of each individual – encapsulate topologies of meaning-making units and offer a key to a unified semiotic and cognitive understanding of meaning. Being dynamic constructs, Strange Attractors of Meaning have both spatial and temporal characteristics. The spatial characte...

How strange a non-strange heavy baryon?

We give some general arguments in favor of the large magnitude of matrix elements of an operator associated with nonvalence quarks in heavy hadrons. We estimate matrix element 1 2mΛb 〈Λb|s̄s|Λb〉 ≃ 1 ÷ 2 for Λb baryon whose valence content is b, u, d quarks. This magnitude corresponds to a noticeable contribution of the strange quark into the heavy baryon mass 1 2mΛb 〈Λb|mss̄s|Λb〉 ≃ 200 ÷ 300MeV ....

Oncogenic osteomalacia: strange tumours in strange places.

Two patients presented with hypophosphataemic osteomalacia and were subsequently found to have small tumours unusual histopathology and location causing the osteomalacia. Each tumour was found after an intensive search for occult masses. Studies of vitamin D metabolism and renal tubular function before and after surgery yielded further insight into the pathophysiology of oncogenic osteomalacia....

Making Sense of Strange Sounds: (Mutual) Intelligibility of Related Language Varieties. A Review

In this paper we ask two questions, which superficially seem to ask the same thing but in actual fact do not. First, we ask to what degree two languages (or language varieties) A and B resemble each other. The second question is how well a listener of variety B understands a speaker of variety A. When we ask to what degree two language varieties resemble one another, or how different they are (...

Making the Familiar Strange -- and Interesting -- Again: Interpretivism and Symbolic Interactionism in Educational Technology Research

The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the methodological and theoretical assumptions of interpretive research as proposed by Erickson (1986), based on the premises that Blumer (1969) posed for symbolic interactionism. A specific example of a conceptual framework for studying the major theoretical constructs identified in distance education research will be presented. Although this framework...
